Murphy answered. “Sir, I think he’s already got enough signatures. The question in my mind is whether or not it will actually pass. If it does, sir, you’ll have a very serious problem to deal with.”
“It’s inconceivable to me. The citizens of this state wouldn’t vote for it. It’s insane.”
“Sir, it seems to me if many more incidents like yesterday occur, they just might. Look out your window. Do you really believe some college kid on the GI bill did that? Someone who was conveniently Iraqi? I don’t. No offense to anyone, but if this was a serious attempt at a major terrorist incident, they would have done it in the day and killed a few hundred people. Instead, it was in the dead of night. The federal building was destroyed, but there were very very few casualties. I think this was done by a local who wanted to hurt the feds only. The DHS is barking up the wrong tree by rounding up Arab families.”
Slagter grimaced and nodded.
“I believe you’re right, Colonel.” He paused and looked out at the plume of smoke rising from the center of the city, then spoke again, his gaze far away.
“We need to get on top of this. If we can just keep the feds from doing anything else really stupid between now and election day.”
Murphy nodded. One more incident might push them over the edge. General Peak spoke. “Well, Colonel, tell Captain Greenfield we won’t hang her out to dry.”
“Yes, sir.”
Slagter stood. “Murphy, be prepared to come back here for a press conference later today. I’ll send someone around to get you.”
“Yes, sir.” Murphy stood when Slagter did. It was clear he was being dismissed. “And sir—thank you.”
“All right, Colonel. You can get back to your troops, we won’t keep you any longer.”
